Is there a simple way of knowing what my rights are as an employer or an employee?
Yes there is. The Department of Labour has an excellent website which provides detailed information on your rights and obligations as an employer and an employee.  http://www.dol.govt.nz/workplace/knowledgebase/employmentrelations
I have tried the website, but I still don't know what to do - can you help me?
